Few people actively want to go into a field like medical billing, but it’s something that’s needed, and for those who like math, accounting and counting money, it’s a good field of choice, especially if health care is also among your passion.

This isn’t a front and center job, instead something that’s done behind the scenes, so how do you know what the job description is, and what kind of salary you can expect?

Medical billing is very similar to what a lot of accountants do in large companies, but there’s also some differences since you’re working in the medical field. Most of the work done is making sure bills are paid, except it’s not always by patients, or customers. Insurance companies take care of many health care bills, so this adds a twist to an otherwise fairly straightforward job.

On top of billing patients, you need to fill in insurance forms, and keep in contact with the insurance providers. Also, you may need to communicate with various government agencies as well, since they too can cover some procedures for various people, again because you work in a medical field.

So on top of being good with numbers, someone wanting to go into medical billing needs to be very good at organizing themselves, otherwise it’s very easy to get lost among all the paperwork and the various companies and organizations.

Entering the field is fairly similar to going to any billing related job. You can go to business school, getting into an accounting program, and doing a full college degree. Or, there’s also some schools who offer directly the medical billing accreditation you need, and those programs tend to be less time intensive.

Regardless which route you take, once that’s done, you’re likely to need to get an internship inside of a hospital or private clinic. Where you end up working also affects your salary expectation. At first, you can get around $36,000 per year, and that can go up to $48,000. It’s overall a job that can be somewhat stressful, since there’s so much to do, and requires charisma to deal with so many different people, usually over the phone.

You also need to remember that while there’s always a need for medical billing personnel, most institutions only need a couple, and the opportunities can be few. Still, the salary is interesting for what ends up being a fairly simple job.

Medical billing salary is something that can be quite nice to many people who like numbers and dealing with money, and those who have an analytic mind. It’s a field of work that always requires people, but you need to show your skills to be sure to get a full time employment once you’re out of school.
